Role: Former McKinsey & Company Project Intern

Topic: Anything

What is the culture working in McKinsey like? How was the interview process?

I had an amazing time doing the internship with McKinsey - my supervisor was highly intellectual both in the business and emotional sense. The team also provided avenues for me to learn how C-suites make decisions, through sitting in C-suite meetings and conducting employee interviews for change management & root cause analysis.

The interview process was to go through a case study where I was asked: "How would you shorten the delivery time as a parcel delivery company that has traditionally been late most times"

I can't remember the parameters - but the key is to ask the right questions to get closer to the answer which is what most consultants do.

Hello! How was your time at mck and what did you work on? Also, Do you have any tips on the application process? Thank you very much!

Feel free to reference my answer to the previous question on my time at McK!

As for application process - it was a case study. Details can be found in the previous question as well.

I worked on introducing automation to the printing company and understanding the root cause of low throughput - with reasons ranging from low employee morale, fear of automation to frequent machine downtimes. In the end, we found out that the distribution of workload to the right machine was scheduled manually and crafted/proposed a computation logic to handle the workload distribution for optimal throughput.

What skills or resources do you recommend for someone who is interested in joining consulting?

Frankly, my view is that the best consultants are quick thinking, resourceful, emotionally attuned and always able to read the room while maintaining a professional front. While it's less of the hard skills, the key is really being able to ask the right questions, with high efficacy in proposing a solution and pitching it forward.

how much does a consultant typically earn

Frankly, it has been quite challenging to get the exact numbers from my experience. However, my sensing is that top MBB consultants out of college would likely be able to earn upwards of S$5-6K? Don't quote me on this as I had not attempted to be an MBB consultant after graduation. I realised it wasn't what I wanted too

does the degree one studies in uni matters when it comes to applying for a consulting role?

I don't think it matters although there are likely benefits/learnings from your degree which are transferrable to the role. For example, being an engineering graduate would grant you design thinking, and perspectives on testing your hypotheses and validating them in the real world, whereas a business graduate may be more well-versed with financials etc.

All in all, a consultant will need to be well-rounded and have to be quick to learn new things on the job. Learning to learn is more important than what you studied in university for being a great consultant.
